Community Garden Update
The Wildlands Trust has tilled and amended the soil with composted turkey manure from Bongi's Turkey Farm (where we buy our fresh turkey for Thanksgiving, sliced turkey lunch meat, and occasionally treat ourselves to a fried chicken picnic lunch). They are also trying to get rid of the ants by spreading coffee grounds. "Earl Proulx's "Yankee Home Hints" recommends sprinkling coffee grounds around your garden to eliminate cutworms and ants. He also says that "to get rid of ants in the lawn, mix about 1 pound of coffee grounds in 1 quart of hot water and pour this on anthills. Red ants, which make big hills, will require a big dousing." I volunteered to help out with the fence yesterday and after 5 hours of work 4 of us were able to put up the posts around the perimeter of one of the gardens. The back garden will have a metal fence because you can't see it from the road. I need to get busy and plan out my garden - there is a seedling sale this weekend and we hope to be able to plant Memorial weekend. kg
