These are pictures taken on June 6 of the pests in the garden. Eggplant, Pepper, Beans, Cucumber.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

My garden is growing fine. The Neem seemed to take care of most of the pests and everything green and healthy. My eggplant plants are the ones that were eaten the most and don't seem as heathy -- we'll have to see. I have squash blooms, tiny peppers and blooms, and beginning blooms on my tomato plants. Some of my cucumber plants look like they will make it, some may not. I planted okra, more green and yellow beans, more carrots, more beets, and more dill. I have pictures and will post once I have time to pull them off of my camera.

Pests in the Garden

I'll post the pictures later on the blog, but wanted to log my pest problem. Little small holes in the eggplant plants, bean leaves being eaten. Basil leaves curling and yellow/brown splotches. Cucumber vines splitting and leaves turning brown. I've sprayed http://www.garden-guys.com/neem.html in hopes of stopping the pillage and plunder of my vegetable leaves. Checking on it today (1 day later) the bean leaves still seem to be eaten. My pepper plant leaves are curled (not sure if it is related to the spraying).

Good news: I have a little pepper bud, my squash seed are growing and I see little buds on the yellow squash plant I planted.

Composting

The Glattsteins have had compost bins in their backyard for many years. We aren't good about turning it so there are always things growning in it that have to be mixed in. We put mostly vegetable scraps, egg shells, ash, and grass clippings in it. I recently gave Dad a compost bin for the farm. This will prevent the animals from being tracked toward it. I purchased it from MasterGardening.com http://www.mastergardening.com/etc-9025.html Now comes the question about what to compost. I found this website that contained many surprises - 163 Things You Can Compost. I've also added it as a reference link on the left.

My garden

June 1: Pictures taken today show that lack of rain (none for a
month), an early frost, and the heat show that the garden is not as
good as normal. Beans have stopped producing (normally they would
produce through at least the middle of June.). Yellow squash are
producing but not as normal as they normally would. Zukini are
producing nice fruit but below their normal production. White squash
are producing very little. Tomatoes are producing less than normal
but seem to still be setting fruit. Cucumbers are producing very
little.

PICTURES: Cucumbers planted very close and thined to about 4" inches
apart in upper right corner.
Beans planted about 4" apart produced about 1/2 gallon every 2 days
(normal about 1 gallon every 2 days)
Squash thinned to 6" apart. Yellow producing 4 to 8 fruit every 2
days (normally would get 3 times this amount) Yellow are below
tomatoes and bottom of row to right. Zukini about 1 to 2 large fruit
every 4 days (normally would get 3 to6) They are in middle of row to
right. White squash (only picked one to date) normally would get 3 to
6. They are in upper part of right row.

Probably should have separated the squash on the right and planted
them on opposite sides of garden.

More Seedings, Feeding, and Trouble with Cucumbers

Went to the garden today to plant my leftover tomato, onion, and kohlrabi seedlings in the Food Share plot and feed my seedlings.   I fed most of the seedlings with an organic dry fertilizer called Mother Nature's Cuisine which contains 2% nitrogen, 3% phosphate, and 2% potash.  I fed the tomato plants a liquid fertilizer Neptune's Harvest Organic Fish/Seaweed Blend Fertilizer which is 2-3-1.   My beet seedlings have come up.    My dill that was water logged from when I was in Texas isn't going to make it, but I've planted 1 other seedling and some seeds to see if they will come up.    My cucumber seedlings are not looking good, I'm thinking maybe the 40 deg night temperatures might be affecting them.    I've planted a couple of seeds to see how they fair and will thin out the plants depending on how they look.     Don't laugh, I also planted some summer lettuce seeds in a blank sq. foot to see if I can get a little lettuce.
